Description: Bright greenish blue above, yellow on sides, with capability of flashing purple, chartreuse, and a wide range of other colors; body tapers sharply from head to tail; irregular blue or golden blotches scattered over sides; anterior profile of head on adult males (bulls) is nearly vertical; head of females (cows) more sloping; the single dark dorsal fin extends from just behind the head to the tail; anal fin margin concave and extending from anus to tail.
Size: Schooling Dolphin run is schools of the same size fish from about 1 to 20 pounds. Larger fish tend to be loners or pairs (cow and a bull). Bulls often reach 50 pounds and can reach 80 pounds. Cows top the scales at about 40 pounds. The world record is 87 pounds. Florida record is 77 pounds, 12 ounces.
Where found: Offshore in warm waters. Often found around floating debris or weed lines foraging for food.
Remarks: One of the fastest growing fish, thought to live no more than 5 years; swimming speed estimated at 50 knots; spawning in warm oceanic currents throughout much of the year; young found in sargassum weed; feeds on flying fish and squid.
Fishing: Trolling areas around weed lines to locate schooling fish or a lager bull or cow. When schooling fish are found they can be kept round the boat be chumming with bait or keeping one hooked fish in the water at all times. When fish are around the boat feeding, jigs or most casting lures will work, if not live bait is the key.
